As the waves of technological advancements continue to bombard us with exciting new products, a very interesting conflict is emerging. The demand for products that are the most unique and advanced irrefutably exists, however the public is often simultaneously demanding that these products have a sustainable bent to their existence. This decidedly ironic tug of war begs the question – can new technology make our lives more sustainable?

It has become progressively easier and easier to access environmentally friendly products for our homes. To some this means buying organic and locally; for others it is using biodegradable dishsoap; or for some it may be simply starting their family on the road to recycling or composting. However, a common issue that the green enthusiast struggles with is the inability to maintain this level of responsibility with products outside of the home.

The choice of building materials, a pragmatic use of resources, the decision to install energy and water conserving products, and the choice of where to develop housing and other facilities all have a clear influence on the ecological footprint of a building, both during construction and in the long term.
Earth Hour 2011: A Reflection

An event occurred at the end of March that has, in the past few years, become an increasingly well-known phenomenon: Earth Hour. Still just an infant in the timeline of traditions, Earth Hour began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia. This event represented Sydney putting a resounding foot down regarding climate change, with over 2 million people and 2000 businesses turning off lights for one hour. Since then, the worldwide response to Earth Hour has been staggering.

Awareness regarding sustainable seafood is an up and coming theme in the environmentally conscious shopper’s mind. Following the birth of the Ocean Wise program in 2005, prominent chefs and fishmongers in British Columbia are aiding in this paradigm through the insistence that delicious, gourmet seafood can be synonymous with sustainable products.
